Code of Conduct

1. Message to Parents

Essential information concerning our school is contained in this agenda. Please read the information with your child and encourage your child to make use of this agenda every day.

2. Code of Conduct

Myrtle Philip Community School celebrates and honours the rich culture and diverse needs of all learners. Students thrive in environments that promote a sense of belonging. Each student is responsible for upholding a safe and welcoming space for all school community members. This Code of Conduct guides student behavior at school and participating in school-sponsored functions. It outlines how staff will respond when safety or learning are disrupted and aligns with the BC Human Rights Code. It reflects our commitment to equity and inclusion for all students regardless of race, gender identity, ability, or background.

3. Core Values (PAWS)

MPE believes in the core values of:

  • Play
  • Accountability
  • We not Me
  • Stamina

Under these core values at MPE we:

  • Enjoy learning through play and we play by the rules so everyone can have fun.
  • Are thoughtful about our words and actions and take responsibility for ourselves.
  • Care about everyone in our school community. We are stronger when we work together.
  • Believe that we can all get stronger through practice and perseverance.

4. Unacceptable Behaviours

Behaviours contrary to MPE’s Core Values and Code of Conduct include, but are not limited to:

  • Physical violence, abuse, threats, or harassment
  • Verbal abuse or threats toward others
  • Possession of a weapon
  • Use or possession of tobacco, alcohol, or illegal drugs
  • Involvement in illegal activities
  • Theft or willful damage to school or personal property

These behaviours may put others at physical or emotional risk and are therefore unacceptable. Students involved may face restorative or disciplinary consequences, including suspension.

5. Discipline Procedure

Any incident considered more than minor will be documented by the teacher and communicated to parents. More serious infractions requiring administrative involvement will be recorded using a student office referral form.

If a student’s behaviour poses a danger or significantly disrupts learning, the student may be removed from the classroom and referred to the administrative officer with documentation.

When students are referred to an administrator, they can expect:

  • Restorative practice/process
  • Objective listening
  • Problem-solving approach
  • Restitution
  • Circle process
  • Mediation
  • Parental involvement when needed
  • Follow-up to ensure closure
  • Full documentation using the school’s referral system

Consequences will be applied fairly, consistently, and with consideration of age, maturity, and context. They will focus on restoration rather than punishment.

6. Bus Passengers

Bus passenger lists are established each September, and passes are required to ride the bus. Misbehavior on or around the bus may result in a loss of bus privileges. Copies of the bus code will be sent home early each school year.

7. Student Security

Dismissal routines must be followed unless a written note indicates a change. Please refer to our safety procedures for reporting absences or late arrivals.

Students arriving late or leaving early must be signed in or out at the office by a parent. Visitors must sign in at the office and wear a visitor lanyard while on school property.

8. Appearance and Preparedness

We come to school presenting ourselves in a manner that reflects our PAWS values. We arrive ready to do our best for ourselves and our classmates.

Expectations include:

  • We dress in a respectful and appropriate manner for a school setting.
  • Electronic devices such as cell phones, iPods, and iPads must stay in backpacks unless used for learning under teacher direction.
  • Recess and lunch are social times and remain technology-free.

9. Computer and Internet Use

MPE provides technology to support student learning. All users must:

  • Use technology legally, respectfully, and responsibly.
  • Follow copyright laws and FIPPA requirements.
  • Report any threats or security issues to a teacher.
  • Care for all devices properly.
  • Refrain from using social media or games unless directed by a teacher.

Additional information:

  • MPE and SD48 are not responsible for loss of personal information due to system failure.
  • Technology accounts are the property of SD48 and may be reviewed at any time.
  • These rules apply regardless of the device's location.
  • Misuse may result in revoked access to devices, including for academic use.

10. Cell Phones

Cell phones may not be used on school property unless a teacher permits their use for learning. Improper use may result in confiscation and follow-up with staff and administration.

11. Report of Student Progress

Parents will receive two written learning updates (winter and spring) and a June summary via MyEdBC. Updates reflect the 4-point provincial proficiency scale.

Descriptive feedback will be provided throughout the year and included in formal reports when not already shared during the term.

Teachers will offer two informal learning updates (e.g., conferences), which may coincide with dates on the school calendar.

Various assessment strategies are used. Students are encouraged to advocate for how they best demonstrate their learning.

12. Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences

Conferences can be initiated by teachers, parents, or students at any time. While dates are provided, meetings may be scheduled flexibly. Students are encouraged to attend.
