May 5 is Red Dress Day, a National Day of Awareness and Action honouring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirited People (MMIWG2S+). Originating from the REDress Project by Métis artist Jaime Black, this day is marked by red dresses displayed in public spaces and worn in solidarity. We invite our Sea to Sky community to reflect, remember, and stand in allyship.

May is Child Care Month! Sea to Sky School District acknowledges and celebrates the incredibly valuable work of all early childhood educators and responsible adults working across the school district. We are lucky to have school district and community-based professionals facilitating early learning programming in Infant and Toddler programs, Preschool-aged programs, StrongStart, Seamless Day, and Out of School Care programs on school grounds. We know that these educators provide safe, nurturing environments that foster a sense of belonging and support the development of social and emotional skills that are foundational in a child’s life. The patience and care that these educated professionals provide to children and their families is recognized and appreciated this month and every month throughout the year!

Please join us in acknowledging and celebrating the work of our child care staff and the positive impacts they have on children, families, schools, and our community!

Premier David Eby has declared Friday, May 2, 2025, as a provincial day of remembrance and mourning to honour the victims of the Lapu Lapu tragedy. This day offers an opportunity for British Columbians to grieve together and recognize the victims’ contributions to their communities.

An online book of condolences is available for signing until Monday, May 5.

Flags across the province, including in our district, will remain at half-mast until sunset on Sunday, May 4. They will return to full mast on Monday morning, May 5, when school resumes. Our school community joins others across the province in mourning the tragic events that took place during the Lapu Lapu Block Party in Vancouver on April 26. We send our heartfelt condolences to the victims, their families, and everyone affected. As a mark of respect, flags at all Sea to Sky School District sites will be lowered to half-mast until further notice, as outlined in the provincial policy. Section 12(a) if the British Columbia policy on half-masting is available by clicking the headline.

We at Sea to Sky Schools are deeply saddened by the tragic events at the Lapu-Lapu Festival — an important gathering that celebrates family, culture, and community.

We are thinking of the Filipino-Canadian community and all those who have been affected by this devastating event. Our school counsellors, district staff, and school-based teams are available to provide support to students, staff, and families who may be impacted.

The safety, care, and well-being of our learning community remain our highest priorities. In this difficult time, we offer our heartfelt support and stand alongside all those who are grieving.

The ministry with Dr. Hayley Watson, adolescent clinical psychologist from Open Parachute is hosting three, free virtual sessions for parents, guardians and caregivers on creating a personalized step-by-step plan for implementing substance use prevention skills in their home. Participants are required to register in advance for one of the sessions on April 29, May 7 or May 8 from 6:00-7:30 pm PDT. Register by clicking on the headline.

This special day recognizes the dedication, hard work, and invaluable support provided by clerical, administrative assistants, and office professionals who play a pivotal role in keeping our district running smoothly. This Earth Day, the Sea to Sky School District joins communities around the world in honouring our shared responsibility to protect the planet. Through the recent adoption of Policy 109: Environmental Sustainability, the Board affirms its commitment to sustainable practices, environmental education, and the conservation of resources. Rooted in Truth and Reconciliation, the policy recognizes the vital role of Traditional Ecological Knowledge and the interconnection between people and nature. As Spring Break approaches, we want to share a friendly reminder from Vancouver Coastal Health about keeping your family's vaccinations up to date. With travel plans ahead, it’s a good time to check immunization records and ensure everyone is protected.
